Les sutures non-résorbables ont toujours joué un rôle majeur dans le développement des techniques chirurgicales. Bien qu'elles soient encore utilisées dans certains domaines, tels que la chirurgie cardiovasculaire et l'orthopédie, ces sutures conservent leur présence dans l'organisme, offrant un soutien à long terme.

Les sutures non-résorbables peuvent rester dans le corps temporairement avant d'être retirées plus tard, comme c'est souvent le cas lors de la fermeture de la peau.

Les sutures sont fabriquées à partir de fibres synthétiques et naturelles, telles que le fil de soie. Ces fibres naturelles ne sont pas métabolisées par l'organisme.

Des revêtements spéciaux peuvent être appliqués aux fils synthétiques, tels que le polypropylène, le polyester ou le nylon, pour améliorer leur efficacité. Les fils en acier inoxydable sont utilisés en chirurgie orthopédique, par exemple.
